Scoliosis is a spinal condition involving an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. When viewed from behind, a healthy spine appears straight, whereas a spine with scoliosis may resemble a “C” or “S” shape.
Scoliosis can be diagnosed through a physical examination and confirmed with an X-ray.
Understanding Risk Factors of Scoliosis
People may be more likely to develop scoliosis due to:
- Age – symptoms commonly appear between ages 10–15, but scoliosis can also develop in adults due to wear and tear.
- Gender – girls are more likely to experience idiopathic scoliosis.
- Genetics – scoliosis can run in families, even if mild cases have gone unnoticed.
- Underlying conditions – certain neuromuscular or genetic conditions can influence spinal alignment.
