SCOLIOSIS

Scoliosis is a spinal condition involving an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. When viewed from behind, a healthy spine appears straight, whereas a spine with scoliosis may resemble a “C” or “S” shape.

Scoliosis can be diagnosed through a physical examination and confirmed with an X-ray.

Understanding Risk Factors of Scoliosis

People may be more likely to develop scoliosis due to:

  • Age – symptoms commonly appear between ages 10–15, but scoliosis can also develop in adults due to wear and tear.
  • Gender – girls are more likely to experience idiopathic scoliosis.
  • Genetics – scoliosis can run in families, even if mild cases have gone unnoticed.
  • Underlying conditions – certain neuromuscular or genetic conditions can influence spinal alignment.

Types & Causes of Scoliosis

Degenerative scoliosis
Occurs in adults due to age-related changes in the spine, such as wear and tear of the joints and discs.

Idiopathic scoliosis
The most common type, accounting for around 80% of cases. The cause is unknown, but it may have a hereditary link. Idiopathic scoliosis is often categorised by age of onset:

  • Infantile: under age 3
  • Juvenile: ages 3–10
  • Adolescent: ages 10–15, often during periods of rapid growth

Neuromuscular scoliosis
Related to conditions affecting muscles or nerves, such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, or autism.

Syndromic scoliosis
Develops in association with genetic conditions such as Marfan syndrome or neurofibromatosis.

Signs and Symptoms of Scoliosis

Signs of scoliosis can include:

  • “Rib hump” between the shoulder blades
  • Uneven shoulders
  • Uneven hips
  • Leaning to one side
  • Occasional discomfort, especially in the mid-back

How Chiropractic Care Can Help Scoliosis

At Gonnet Chiropractic, our chiropractors assess each individual to understand potential contributors to spinal function. This may include reviewing your health history, lifestyle, posture, and spinal movement.

Assessment may involve:

  • Observation of posture and movement
  • Range of motion testing
  • Orthopaedic assessments

If no recent imaging is available, an X-ray may be recommended to help identify the degree of curvature.

Based on your assessment, care may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments – using manual or low-force techniques
  • Soft tissue therapies
  • Exercise or rehabilitation guidance – to support spinal mobility and postural stability

Each approach is tailored to the individual, with the aim of supporting comfort, mobility, and function.
