LOWER BACK PAIN

Low back pain is one of the most common health concerns worldwide. Research suggests that up to 8 in 10 people will experience some form of back pain during their lifetime. It can affect mobility, comfort, and day-to-day activities, making it a frequent reason people seek healthcare support.

Understanding Risk Factors

Certain groups of people may be more likely to experience low back pain:

  • Age – most common between 30 and 60 years, when the spine begins to show natural signs of wear
  • Occupation – physically demanding jobs or roles involving prolonged sitting
  • Lifestyle factors – sedentary lifestyle or being overweight
  • Medical history – previous back injuries, disc conditions, or degenerative changes

Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

Low back pain may develop from a variety of circumstances, including:

  • Sporting or recreational activities
  • Lifting and physical strain
  • Work-related posture or repetitive movements
  • General wear, arthritis, or disc changes

Some specific examples include:

  • Muscle and ligament strains/sprains – often caused by repetitive or heavy lifting, frequent twisting, or awkward movements
  • Disc bulges or pinched nerves – an estimated 6 in 10 people may experience a disc bulge at some point, which can contribute to lower back pain
  • Poor posture – standing with an exaggerated arch in the lower back (sway back), uneven weight-bearing, or compensations after ankle, knee, or hip injuries may contribute to discomfort

Osteoarthritis or spinal degeneration – commonly found in the lower spine, sometimes experienced as a dull ache, stiffness, or reduced mobility. Inflammation in spinal joints can lead to discomfort, often noticeable with certain movements

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

At Gonnet Chiropractic, our chiropractors begin by reviewing your health history, occupation, and lifestyle factors. This is followed by a physical examination, which may include:

  • Observation of posture and movement (walking, sitting, standing)
  • Range of motion testing
  • Orthopaedic assessments to help identify possible contributing factors to your low back pain

In some cases, if no previous imaging is available, an X-ray may be recommended to gain a clearer understanding of your condition.

Based on your assessment, treatment options may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustments – using manual or low-force techniques, depending on your needs and preferences
  • Soft tissue therapies – such as dry needling or taping
  • Exercise or rehabilitation guidance – specific movements to support recovery and long-term spinal health

Each care plan is tailored to the individual, with the aim of supporting comfort, mobility, and overall wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my back hurt when I haven’t done anything to hurt it?

Heavy lifting is often blamed for low back pain or injuries, however poor posture, incorrect lifting techniques  (even with a light weight), or awkward movement also contribute to low back pain.  Often it is the numerous little things we do that cause the pain not just one “big thing”.

Should I stop exercising or walking when I have back pain?

Although we should take a break from bending, lifting and twisting when we have back pain, it is important to keep gently moving. Short walks (anywhere from 5-30 minutes) at your own pace are advised. Remember, prolonged periods of sitting does not help low back pain.
